School Uniforms; good idea or pointless?

Everyone does have to play sports; it's called Physical Education in the UK and it's mandatory. So are Music lessons until Year 9.

However forcing someone to be in a band is completely different to be in a band or join a sports team is completely different to forcig them to wear a uniform. So different I'm not even going to explain why, you should already know.

However you might try to list the benefits of a school uniform on paper, it is actually very different in practice from my experience. I did a fair bit of moving around a few years back so I went to three different high schools, one was uniformed, two were not.

Uniformed schools are just the standard high school. People still get bullied, the lack of individual clothes does nothing to help that issue. Kids will always find reasons to pick on other kids.

In the two no-uniform schools however, in both cases I found it contributed to a calmer, more mature environment - more like a college then a high school. In those schools we also called teachers by their first names, in the uniformed school it was always "Mr." whoever.

Two different kinds of schools, really. Many schools choose to go the more disciplined and strict way with uniforms and what-not, but I really don't think it helps. Lack of uniforms promotes a calmer and more trusted environment where discipline is not necessary in the first place. For the record, at both the no-uniform schools I went to, I never ONCE saw anyone being bullied (or even getting a snide remark) for what they wore, and I was in those schools combined for just over a year. I spent the rest of my High School education in the uniformed school.

All putting kids in uniforms does in my opinion is, as Kyonko said, remove a personal element from people. This just makes them find other ways to make themselves stand out, and usually it's not in a good way.

My opinion for what it's worth.

People pick on people for being in band. People get picked on for being in a certain type of sport. People get picked on for having less money since uniforms does not give a person more money, a lot of times you need to spend money on the uniforms as well. IMO Uniforms are the last thing to worry about bullying. A lot of time, not always it has to do with how the parents raised him/her

But you're picking on one of the reasons that were given. Take away the 'it helps cut out bullying from schools' reason and there are still several other reasons that back the use of uniforms in schools.

Ok I'll go through Viddy's reason

1) Not really that important when you think about it, what does it matter to which school you go? People are people, maybe this could even cause someone to be bullied, you know you are waiting for the bus someone from a rival school sees the uniform you are wearing and starts trouble with you.

2) This has to do with the bullying so I've already spoken about it

3) It's a good point, but it's kind of a minor point, I used to decide what I was going to wear to school the night before

4) Discipline is easily thought without uniforms, discipline is something parents should be teaching.

5) This is kind of the same as bullying, if they are showing off because of the clothes they have it most likely means that they are actually showing off they have money and therefore they can still show off

6) Can't really think of anything for this

7) People already want to be presentable, they always want to look nice, they always want to look attractive and to some school uniforms are not attractive, they feel as if they don't look the way they wish to look

8) True but school outfits generally cost money as well, plus whats the point of saving so many clothes at a young age when you will grow out of them? They'll get small or tight or something

EDIT: Like for example me, luckily for me I never had to go to a school with uniform, if I did I would have hated it, I wasn't a fan of wearing uniforms or any of that. I wanted to wear something that was me, my decision and if people didn't like it, I was fine with it, at least I was staying true to myself.

Now I understand I have to dress up when it comes to work and interview, but theres one big different, I'll be getting paid to work, meanwhile school is something I must go, of course I know school is the reason to get better jobs, which is why college is extremely important to me, but it's my youth. If someone can't be themselves in their youth, when can they be themselves?

It used to work and back around the time they where introduced with free education, there where bigger gaps between the classes, so someone from a really poor family would have really poor clothes, so a uniform let them have something decent. Not so much the case now since new clothes can be bought cheaply and the divide isn't so big.

I don't think that was down to the lack of uniform, I went to a none uniform secondary school and it was terrible, it's closed down now because it couldn't get students or get a high enough standard of grades.

The uniform or lack of has nothing to do with the behaviour, it's more a combination of teaching/perents/enviroment

It matters because if a student misbehaves outide of school, the public know immeditely what school they go to and it's a way to identify them.
It also makes it easier for teachers to keep tabs of students when they go on school trips. All the students are wearing uniforms so if the teacher is looking for a studet that's gone missing, they just have to look for the uniform.
This is one of the big reasons for uniforms.

There is no way all students want to look nice. You want to look nice, and so do a lot of people, but that doesn't mean everyone does. There are plenty of students (and parents) who wouldn't care what they/their children looked like going to school.
Also, define nice. Would a student wearing a black trenchcoat, black make-up, boots with spurs and a t-shirt with a bleeding skull on it look nice? There's nothing wrong with it, it's just not presentable. A Uniform is a quick means of ensuring everyone looks presentable.

Uniforms don't cost much at all these days, well in the UK anyway. And also, with this point he meant that somebody's new t-shirt wouldn't get ruined by playing football or sports etc.

That's silly, on my twelve years of going to a school with no uniforms, and knowing people that went to schools without uniform, this was NEVER an issue, teachers pretty much already recognized everyone so I see this as a minor issue, especially since field trips don't happen all the time anyways.

People should look the way they want of course as long as it goes by the "dress code" some people may think they look terrible in a school uniform. And like I said wanting to look professional in school? I mean come on it's school people already find school boring and hate it as it is why make it even worse by getting all professional? We're young in school we want to express ourselves, something we won't be able to when we get a job, we'll have dress up because we'll have no choice.

If the uniforms don't cost much then they will be cheap, and therefore there's still going to be the people constantly complaining that they have to wear cheap uniforms.

I liked school. I liked my uniform. It made me look nicer than when I wear my ordinary clothes. I'd much rather wear a suit all day than casual clothes. People tend to look so much more respectable. If I saw a big issue seller wearing a suit or uniform then it would give me a completely different impression of the types of people who sell them. Whereas in reality they just look like drab homeless people. Which some of them are.

I liked our uniform too. I share your views on suits; I need to get a proper suit.

Back in America, the only "uniformz" that I wore were ma school jerseys for the Basketball teams all the way throughout Varsity years and below. Other than that, you are free to wear whatever you want in classes and *****.
